or, conversely, if you dont stop it from barking, ill have it removed as you havent paid anything for it to stay here. undecided

at the moment, neither scenario is accurate.

the middle and both ends of the 'dog' thing is that, while the club 'welcomes dogs' (free of charge) a large number of even well behaved dogs can be intimidating to those who dont have dogs.

i know....as ive had a dog for 12 years and understand the pleasure it can share with you, but also the other side, having been attacked by a dog at a petrol station when i was very young, and being bitten on the face.....not a very nice experience for an eight year old, it took me a very long time to be confident again around dogs.....these days im fine with all bar some bull terrier types...and a few on CTwink..

despite the clubs position, i dont think many owners understand that walking towards someone, with two (or even three) dogs in tow, can be quite intimidating.

numbers of dogs, per unit and overall, seem to be rising (my own observations) with the situation where the numbers of dogs themselves may, in the future, outnumber those members who dont have dogs.

perhaps, then, the club will have just dogs as members and will have a 'welcomes humans' policy.wink

while there was a lot of poo-poohing of the earlier post suggesting a full fee for a dog, at some point the club will need to decide what level of dogs is enough (won't it? and do they even know how many are on site at any one time?).....and when numbers reach that level, what they will do to keep them in check.

as AD says, imposing a substantial fee for dogs, certainly reduces the overall number on site, with those who do bring them on most overseas sites are restricted to the Brits...who else?

I don't think it matters how many dogs are on site, does the number reach a critical mass and then become a danger? If so I would have thought that that would have happened by now. In my visits to cub sites over the years I haven't noticed a huge increase in dog numbers, nor in fact have I ever been bothered by dogs or any 'deposits' left around the site.

I do not own a dog and never wanted to own one realising what a great responsibility they are, but they bring great joy to people and if they want to share their outfit with a whole pack (very emotive word there btw) then that is totally up to them.

A pack of dogs can consist of as few as 2 dogs ,an Alfa dog and beta dog 🐶, and I don't see the term a "pack" of dogs derogatory cool

A local council down this part of the world has introduced a byelaw prohibiting anyone from taking more than 4 dogs for a walk as, in their view, that is the maximum that might reasonably be controlled by an individual. A view with which I'm inclined to concur.

CAMC sites are primarily for "people" to enjoy caravan/MH'ing. It is not, nor should be, a principal location for "all things doggy". That is what the kennel club/Crufts is for.

having had to visit the general area CY refers to (in Portsmouth for a van service) i have come across dog walkers, usually two or three people looking after 4/5/6 dogs each.

not an expert, but they didnt look to be totally 'in control'...

As one who is certainly not devoted to all things dog, we once went to a 10 pitch private site, very nice, but we found about a dozen dogs on site with the other vans already there.  In addition, we didn't know in advance that the owners also ran a boarding kennels in a corner of the plot where there were many more. We were very glad to get away from the place, never to return. I/we  just don't want to be amongst so many dogs.

We have had this 4 dog maximum bye law for many years now (Wandsworth council) it also applies on local parks, Wimbledon Common, Wandsworth Common to name a few. (Strangely though, whilst people complain about dog mess on Wmbledon Common, the Horse S**t is not mentioned ?) Life still seems to carry on. the Dog walking service vans are still very busy around my area. I was speaking to someone in the next street a while back. She pays £90 a week for 2 days surprised

    BB,

all I was trying to point out was the typical response you could expect from the small minority of offenders. I think you would have to agree that the very small percentage of people who post on CT either way on this subject is not representative of what really goes on.

All I know is from my experiences and all the sites I have visited since returning to the hobby last year is that they have been fine. with regards dog owners being courteous and  respectful of the rules and other campers. I can only speak as I find.

I wonder if some sort of study was done, if it would show up any trends with the issue, i.e. geographically hot spots, couples or families, caravaners or Motorhomers.

It would be interesting I think? smile

People may still choose to take that number of dogs even at those prices because it's still significantly cheaper than kennelling would be.

Some dog owners need to be charged for the disruption they cause - but if the club started charging - I would walk away!  I picked carefully in France - sites that only charged for more than one dog or dogs free - I didn't use any sites that charged for both - or for dogs over 10kg which both mine are!  We all need to try and be ambassadors for responsible and considerate behaviour.  innocent

Because there are alternatives you won't see people choosing sites with expensive fees for dogs.

If high charges were universal you would see more dogs on site.

I currently rule out sites with high dog charges because there are many places that are reasonable. If all were equal I would use any site tfat took my fancy.

£5 per dog on site or minimum £15 per dog for kennelling?  Easy decision plus I get to keep my dog with me

CT at its very worst! frown

A perfectly reasonable OP, albeit on an always controversial topic, making an absolutely reasonable point about the rules and one that no responsible dog owner could possibly disagree with, is diverted down this ridiculous (IMHO) sidetrack of "squeeze then till the pips squeak", "that's what they do over there" etc etc.

Just a (respectful) question to those who argue this so vociferously, whilst rarely actually using club sites -

Suppose the CAMC introduces a "substantial" charge for dogs leading to a dramatic fall in numbers on site - on a scale of 1 to 10, how much more likely are you then to use club sites regularly? undecided

Oh, I'm listening, David - but a bit confused, because I've not often come across these "packs" of dogs on site which you are suggesting charging for all dogs would discourage. In fact, I can probably count on the fingers of two hands the number of occasions over the years when I've seen folk with, certainly, more than 3 dogs ( and then they seem to have as much cotrol over them as the majority of others).

Anyway, if the consequence of charging and possible reduction in numbers clearly won't persuade you to use club sites more regularly why are making the assumption that others will?

All this responsible dog owner (sometimes one, sometimes two, sometimes three) wants, is to be quietly left alone to enjoy my holiday. Doesn't matter if Club Site, CL, private site, we use them all, get a nice welcome and do our very best to adhere to everything expected from us, respect the privacy, health and holiday happiness of other visitors, and concentrate on having a good time.

We don't prejudge others, with or without dogs, and respect the decisions of fellow visitors to tour with whatever family members makes them happy, be it as a couple, as a family, or with loved pets. There are lots of site options that allow us to do this, some charge for dogs, some don't. It will be our choice as to what we pay, we are well used to extra charges for dogs in cottages and hotels, doesn't bother us one little bit.

If we happen to come across someone, with or without a dog who is affecting our holiday negatively, then we will try and diplomatically suggest better behaviour, via site supervisors if required. Likewise, we are bright enough to recognise that at times, holidaying in certain places, at certain times, on certain sites, will not suit us at all. So we go elsewhere, don't put ourselves into a situation that might prevent enjoyment. Lots of choices, easy to do.

Ok thanks, I just find it amazing that dogs were charged more than children. Was the owner trying to discourage dogs I wonder?
