Adults only CLs how old is 'Adult'?

As our kids are growing up I'm starting to wonder if we can stay on Adult only CLs. (We only ever use CLs) the kids are 17 & 14 both quiet & responsible young people who've been brought up caravanning, taught how to behave etc. I've absolutely no worries
that they'd be any trouble to anyone.
I understand the idea behind adult only sites is to spare people from kids making noise & generally a quieter holiday experience?
Is there a hard & fast rule on this or is it simply down to the CL owners discretion ?
Any thoughts would be most welcome!

Probably best to check with CL owners on an individual basis, as age ranges can vary. There are an awful lot of CLs that are not AO though. Hope you find something to suit.

Very sensible advice from ttda. Often the reason for adults only is the CL insurance, unfenced water etc. I don't mind sharing sites with well behaved children, sadly you can't advertise for that . In fact I don't mind sharing sites with well behaved
adults either. Again you can't put that in your advert!3 -
Most AO CLs are over 18. A few, very few, say over 16. I'm afraid you'll struggle to find one that considers a 14 year old adult.
Just imagine the complaints there'd be if someone saw a quiet sensible 14yo on an AO CL
It's market forces and the recommendation of the CC CL inspector that is behind the decision to go AO. Not deep water or machinery etc

Thanks for the advice, I'll check with the individual CLs. We've stayed on loads of CLs but sometimes when I search for a CL that takes dogs & has toilets / showers I end up with only adults only options.
Jay ESS, do you believe the CL inspectors are encouraging CL owners to go adults only ? For what reason?

I agree that it would be a minimum of 16 or 18. Whilst your 14 year old might be well behaved and have been brought up to consider others on site, this could not be said of all, hence having the same rule for all. Having said that, to be honest we have
only ever come across children on two of the CLs we have been on, hence we don't particularly look for adult only. Whilst the children were no bother generally, on both occasions they were outside early at around 8am and struggled to keep their voices down
(not a complaint, just an observation). Hence if there was more children we would look for adults only ( not because we don't like children, just because we like to relax a bit more and the dog is disturbed less so we want a site that is conducive to this).
If I had booked an adult only CL to be honest I would be annoyed to find children there.0 -
Gareth, A CL owner told me that the recommendation to be AO came from the Inspector. I doubt very much that they are the only one.
My children prefer smaller quieter sites and are rarely seen outside the van. Finding a CL in the ideal location and then discovering it's AO is infuriating. I just cross them out in the handbook when it arrives but I do wish the website search allowed us to exclude AO sites. Ticking child friendly doesn't get the same result.

Jayess, after 18 months of CL searching (I use the website) I only noticed the "child friendly" icon the other day, showing either the infrequency of it's use or my lack of observation (I suspect the former). Would it be worthwhile contacting the Club and
asking them to encouarage CL owners to use this icon if they are not adult only. Alternatively, do CL owners have their own Facebook group and if so you could message them and ask them to use the forum to encourage their owners to use the icon. This could
maybe help with a more productive search in the future.0 -
I've raised it with the Club Tracey but there's been no change.
There's a big difference between child friendly and accepting under 18s on site. Child friendly is really aimed at primary age I think. Teenagers aren't the same thing at all (interested in wifi and social media on site according to the Club Council Report
but that's a whole other discussion on how far out of touch the CC is with members needs
)I won't be using CLs at all soon so will have to leave others to take up the fight for a decent search facility

Lots of interesting points. I was looking round Glastonbury & found a perfect one but its AO, just got me thinking. We need showers, toilets (we are 4 up in a small motorhome!) & 'allows dogs' so I'm already reducing my options. We've never used club sites
, we prefer CLs. We've been members for 12 years but when the kids were little we had a big caravan so we just needed a field & a tap! We've often found ourselves the only ones with kids on a CL too
I don't think its on until the youngest turns 16 , then I'll ask if its OK before booking. Thanks to everyone for the advice

Just spent two nights at Rhandirmwyn. Great site but came home a night early today after getting very little sleep last night due to 4 adults and 4 screaming kids in a single trailer tent right behind us. Kids screamed from 1200 to 0130 and then again from 0530 to 0630. We have a 21 year old and a 16 year old and have been through all of that before (-: These kids ran amok squealing from the second they arrived. We love kids but parents really should take control. Nighrmare so its adults only wherever possible from now on.

Gareth, sounds like you are going to be out of luck. Have you considered the small independents. I find normal club sites large and expensive, large commercial sites are not my thing so it is CL's for me. When out of luck I have stayed at some 20/30 unit independents and they are nice and quiet.

Wonder if Gareth ever got a definitive answer to his OP? Perhaps one of the CL owners that post on here could supply an answer.
As for the suggestion that inspectors are advising C L owners to go AO, perhaps it is to direct families with children to use club sites.......more cash for the CC.

I think that depends very much on your kids. Kids that enjoy nature, and there are a lot, dont need playgrounds, which are for the little ones anyway, and can amuse themselves, without annoying other campers. I agree Adult Only usually means 18+. But I think the majority of CLs are not AO.

Whilst recognising that penny buns are no longer 1p., I see that most new EHU CL's are £25 or higher. Even allowing for current inflation, that does seem to be a substantial jump from what was the previous "norm". Is it part of CAMC policy to drag CL prices up to follow the increases on Club sites?

I have said the same in the past, CY, but Ro denies that that is the case!!!!!! Make of that as you will, it does seem very strange that there is a huge jump in site fees especially on new CL compared to many of the of older ones where one can still get a pitch with EHU for £18 or in some cases a lot less.

Mind you, that could reflect the costs involved in setting up a new CL. It’s bound to a hefty sum to recoup compared with those who set their sites up years ago 🤷🏻♂️

That is likely the case in some instances, TW, but there are many well established CLs that have hiked their prices well above inflation, and taking into account the much higher power prices.

My word How much I have not increased my prices and I have ruled out price rises next year 2024.
