Years ago it was our first overseas tour too, though we did your route in reverse. Our first night was at Camping Fort Lapin at Bleriot Plage on the edge of Calais itself and we went back several times later. That site is still there and there are reviews on UKCampsite.co.uk. It’s an unsophisticated site, but with the advantage of being right on the sea front with access to the huge empty beach through the back gate and over the dunes. It could perhaps suit you at the end of your tour.
But if I may make a suggestion I would say start your tour at Cherbourg rather than Caen - the ferries arrive at better times and there are lots of quiet sites as you drift down the Cotentin peninsula south of Cherbourg . For instance Camping La Bucaille is a very popular CL type of place in that area.0 -
thanks for your contribution , we have booked the ferries already! did you have any issues with a large caravan?

With the caveat that's its a few years since we've stayed along that coastline, we did find, for spacing out at least, that a stop around the Honfleur area, maybe at Camping domaine catiniere, then one at St.Valery-sur-Croix, try Camping le Walric. We tended to have smallish caravans so can't comment about TA pitches, but the locations are pretty good with lovely towns to explore. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
As to "quiet" as I don't know when you'll be going I can't comments but Summer near the sea/beaches is always going to be noisy.

If you are using the 0800 sailing from Portsmouth which arrives at Caen (Ouistreham) at 1500 then a possibility for your first night is a site in Lion sur Mer - just 10 or 15 minutes from the ferry port. It’s only listed as Camping à la Ferme and that it’s owned by a Mr Chevalier . i don’t know it personally but I trust the people who have told me about it. They were very satisfied with it and with the space for a large caravan. There are recent reviews once again on UKCampsite .co.uk
Try to avoid the 1500 sailing from Portsmouth - it lands you in France at 2200. That campsite site will be closed and there are few other overnight options nearby except Camping Riva Bella - a site which has always divided people’s opinions..0 -
thanks again, great replies, if you have any further additions that are slightly inland that would be great, we are open to seeing other options?

”Slightly inland”. Well Bayeux for sure. The town campsite there (Les bords de l’Aure) is always popular, but there are others around the town.

If you want a couple of days inland from Calais or just an overnight stop we always headed for Camping Ardresien at Ardres about a 20/30 minute drive to the ferry. They do Hardstanding pitches as well but best check for length.

Further along the Normandy coast . Camping du Colombier at Offranville. About six miles inland from Dieppe - all sorts of seafood restaurants beside the harbour in the town, also six miles to shingle beaches, and close to a must see garden called Vasterival designed by a Princess. It’s one of the dwindling band of municipal sites, cheap as chips and nicely set in a park.
