We are Kiwis planning our 2026 European Motorhome holidays, purchasing a Motorhome through the UK Personal Export Scheme, UK registered with export plates. An item we need help with is finding an insurance company who will insure our motorhome and travels as non-residents.

Any advice or contacts would be greatly appreciated

Derrick

Hi You can try the Caravan and Motorhome Insurance department as they insure all types of leisure vehicles, look at the main website and you should find details there, hope this helps and enjoy your tour next year.

Derrick, otherwise you say to the dealer selling the vehicle to you that you will only buy it if he can arrange temporary UK insurance for you.

Not that easy, even with a local address we are classed as non-residents plus with no local driving records. I'll keep searching

Derrick. Yes you have identified that difficulty. So see whether you can approach the problem from a different direction.

Visitors come to the Uk from all over the world and rent / hire cars and motorhomes with insurance included by the company they rent from. Now you have a dealer who is selling a vehicle to you rather than renting, but if he really wants to make the sale he could perhaps insure it on his own company policy and include you on it as a named driver for the time you are in the UK. As he would if he were renting / hiring it to you.

I hope you can find a solution to make your visit a success.

Hi Derrick It's a bit hit and miss trying to find this insurance yourself. You might be better off asking an insurance broker to find cover for you.

Try Adrian Flux based in Norfolk.

    Best of luck.

Try the British Insurance Brokers Association who might be able to point you in the right direction.

I read somewhere that this club has some sort of arrangement with the New Zealand equivalent, I think its NZ Motorhome and Caravan club. I don't know if you have a motorhome in NZ but even if you haven't it might be an idea to see if my suspicion is correct, then talk to them, maybe becoming a member to access Insurance.

Of course I may be talking rubbish but this has cropped up in the past on a forum.

    No harm in trying though.

I assume it is the lack of a UK address that is causing the problem. I have never had a problem insuring an export vehicle but I have always had a UK address. Is it not possible to insure in NZ for use abroad?
