PLEASE ALL AVOID THIS PLACE. I went there in May, it was my first visit. I was placed on a hard standing with water and electric. We had a good time. As we liked the place we booked a return over the August bank holiday. At the time the young lad took our booking. We paid for the same again, selecting plot 12, and he said, "as long as they do not move you". He gave us the impression that moving bookings was common. Well he was correct. When we arrived they gave us a grass pitch at 120 something. we were right next to the road. I looked to complain, but the owner was at the races and he had left two lovely old people, man and woman, to take the flak. We did complain and were given another grass pitch as all hard standings were taken. We were so disappointed. We looked at getting a refund and was told all pitches were the same price, REALLY? never heard of that before. To us it seemed a scam, you buy a costly pitch, then they move you to a cheaper one, and charge someone else for the expensive pitch. We had no chance of getting a refund as they said the prices were the same for all pitches, but when you book a pitch, i don't care what the small print says, you at the very least expect the SAME TYPE, not completely different at the same price. NEVER AGAIN. Be warned and please pass this on. The poor couple left to deal with this are not to be held responsible, but the owner who is a right so and so, runs off and leaves them to sort out the mess. I had it in writing plot 12, makes no difference, except they have lost our custom for life. We would have booked here at least twice a year now its never. If you are not fussed about grass or hardstanding, never mind what you book, then its an ok place to stay. When we buy a chocolate bar we expect a chocolate bar, not a bag of crisps. This chap should pay the price, how many others have had the same issue at Colchester. BE WARNED.

PitchUp has a photo of the grass pitching area - looks attractive and picturesque. Lovely in fact. Why moan?

I think it's a bit unfair - dangerous even - to describe this as a 'scam'. According to pitch-up - the price of both types of pitch is 'from' £35, so I don't understand how a refund was due?? What I wouldn't accept - but each to their own, I suppose - is that the price for both types of pitch jumps to £70pn on Fridays and Saturdays.
I agree with ET - that the grass pitches look nice - and would be my choice anyway - especially at this time of the year with the weather being as it has. Winter, would be a different matter.
