It is not a problem. You will encounter many others following the same route and likely staying at the same sites..
Where is your start point in France?
We have always used a selection from these sites:
Les Acacias, La Ville aux Dames, near Tours
Le Futuriste, near Poitiers
2 around the Bordeaux ring road
Larrouleta, Urrugne (on the border)
And then, depending on onward direction and / or distance covered: the Municpal site at Zaragoza / Altomira at Navajas / Burgos / La Cabrera north of Madrid / Aranjuez south of Madrid
Arrive at destination the next day.
We don’t book but it’s advisable to check directly with the sites nearer the time. Although looking at the website for Les Acacias, it seems they now like you to book for low season stop overs.0 -
@roadrunner We start from Calais too as we use the Tunnel. Get a very early crossing and make the site near Poitiers by around 4 / 5pm. If we feel we won't get that far, we stop near Tours. Although as I said, they now seem to require a booking. But worth an email to check.
That first day is the longest, but we just want to get across France in the shortest possible time in January. By the time we reach Larrouleta the weather is often pleasant and some people stay there for few nights to break the journey.
You might get lucky and find someone to volunteer to travel with you but there really is no need. It's a straightforward trip and you tend to run into the same people at each site, following the same route.0

if you don’t find a volunteer come back on here with your chosen route and several of us can point out campsites open in winter. An easy route - with sites available - is to go overnight from Portsmouth to St Malo and down the western side of France - but you may have a different plan.

Thank you for both comments. We were thinking of the western route having gone that way last summer but only as far as La Rochelle. Our start point sadly has to be Calais so I know it adds a lot more miles . We have done poole cherbourg before but apprehensive of a January crossing so that's why considering the Tunnel . One problem is the short winter days to drive in daylight and also find the sites in good time . Maybe 250 miles a day max ?.Would feel better with someone who's done it before.

If I had to go from Calais I would be thinking of a couple of days in Paris, and perhaps the same in Lyon and Avignon . Yes, even in mid winter . We like city breaks and there are sites open all year in all those three cities - and they are cities which we like. I have suggested that on here before but it gets greeted with silence.
But driving in convoy never worked for us . We tried it with our best friends - but even so they wanted to do different speeds , different distances, different lunch breaks, different routes and different campites. Good luck with that one !0 -
@eurortraveller yes, you have made those suggestions before. Possibly they are greeted with silence as people are perhaps not attracted to the idea of French city breaks in a caravan in January, when the aim and focus of the journey is to get to Spain. (Anyway the site at Lyon is dire and I wouldn’t want to spend time there just to explore the city.) Occasionally, on the return trip, when the days are longer, we have explored places like Biarritz, Arcachon - and Vichy a couple of times.
I relish European city breaks but prefer to fly and use hotels. We have been to Paris many, many times (since my student days in the 1960s) but now go by Eurostar and stay in a central hotel.
In Spain on our Winter trips we occasionally do explore cites, staying on Aires / Sites nearby: Zaragoza, Salamanca, Seville, Barcelona, Granada, and additionally one year, Lisbon.
I wouldn’t wish to travel in convoy either and I think the OP may find it difficult to get someone to agree to accompany them. But one never knows.0 -
Lots of tips thanks again I am greatful . Would definatly like to get through France quickly and do some hard driving to hopefully get down to Poitiers. thank you "not going gently" (love the name!) does anyone use the clubs breakdown service or is there abetter one ?

Two so far not interested in a stop at Lyon…but just for the record Camping des Barolles at St Genis Laval on the south side of the city isn’t “dire” at all.
