Charging my car

We have a 2012 coachman pastiche and a Volvo XC60 hybrid. We have asked at a couple of sites if we were able to charge our car over night but both sites seemed unable to give us any reassurance that it would be ok. In fact one site said that nobody had ever asked them before so they were unsure if it would be ok. Therefore we decided not to risk charging our car on site. We would really like to be able to do this in the future so wondered if anyone had experience of doing this.
Many thanks

I assume you mean a plug in hybrid? You can use your EHU on a Club site for a modest extra charge. I think the question you have to ask sites is whether they have charging facilities for EV's. Some sites will be more advanced than others although I notice a lot of CL's don't allow charging.. The advantage of a plug in hybrid is that it is probably easier to take off site to charge. The alternative might be t top up en route. Andrew Ditton's YouTube channel has a lot info on charging on the journey, We also have a contributor here called Chocolate Trees who tows with a full EV who may also be able to advise?

Yes it’s a plug in hybrid.
I’ll have a look at what you have suggested

I don’t know what sites you asked at but CAMC has a very clear policy. Note, you must charge via your caravan, not direct from the bollard and a fee applies which wardens should be aware of. On a CL, it is up to the site owner to decide and apply his own terms.

It was more about the fact that they had to go away and read up on the policy and that they said they had never been asked before. So they weren’t confident that the electrics wouldn’t trip. But said we could give it a try if we wanted to. We were very surprised at this and couldn’t believe they had never been asked before. We were then worried that we would cause a problem either with the sites electrics or in our caravan. I was hoping that someone would write on here and say that they had charged their car on a site and had no issues. Hope that makes sense. Many thanks again

If you charge via your caravan the circuit breakers in your van will protect the electrics and you won’t be able to harm anything which is one reason camc stipulate that method. The worst that can happen is that just your supply will trip out and I’m confident it won’t as long as you remember your total draw can only be 16amps. You won’t harm the site electrics at all because your circuit will be protected and isolated from the rest of the site. It’ll be a slow charge though.

Show the wardens that link if they still don’t know what it’s all about.

Thank you very much for the information. We found it very useful which gives us confidence to try charging our car the next time we visit a camc site.
    Many thanks

You’re welcome. It’s all been thought out by camc who aren’t going to risk anything untoward happening on site. People report seeing EVs charging on sites in this manner and, of course, complain about the price!

Re charging on Club sites using your EHU it will probably be fairly slow [ like using a granny charger at home rather than a dedicated fast charger] so best for top ups. At least the advantage of a plug in hybrid is the dual fuel element which gives you some flexibility.

I think I read some where that they had stopped allowing vehicle charging on the site hook ups but in the past we have paid £9 to charge our hybrid car on our pitch. I understand that the up grade at the Hillhead site will include charging points

@Amesford charging via the caravan is still the way to do it as per my link above and the cost is £7. This is currently shown in the FAQ.

We used to charge up our 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 PHEV when it was £2/3 to charge, fuel consumption with a depleted battery was around 34/36 mpg, plus Podpoint and public charging points were reasonable priced, however after the energy price crisis this all changed.

In August 2023 we changed to a Suzuki Across (rebadged Toyota RAV4 PHEV) fuel consumption with a depleted battery 50/55mpg (advances in technology) £7/9 to charge no longer financially make sense so we only charge up at home off peak.

We were at Blacknowl in June/July they have a dedicated 7kWh charging point we did notice 4 full electric vehicles on site towing, a Tesla owner would charge up everyday all day from his caravan he definitely got his £7 worth.

Hi @Irene Printie I'm really happy that you found the info shared by other members helpful and you can indeed charge your car on our Club Campsites. There's also some further info on electric charging and also what Club Campsites have dedicated EV charging points on the Club website. 🙂
